These mountains are in the Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park, in China and were formed due to sandstone and various minerals mixing together over millions of years . The park is located in the eastern foothills of the Qilian Mountains in Gansu Province.. The geological park has a Danxia ( red cloud) landform area that covers about 50 square kilometres (19 square miles).
